I am experienced and knowledgeable in fly fishing in the saltwater flats waters of Laguna Madre. I specialize in catching redfish on the fly; you will have the time of your life catching big redfish on the fly here in South Texas. Here on the Laguna Madre, we have miles and miles of pristine shallow-water flats with schools of tailing redfish willing to take a well-placed fly. Fly fishing the flats in Corpus Christi, Texas, is like no other in the United States. The thrill of casting your fly into a school of tailing redfish is second to none. Come spend a day fly fishing the shallow flats of the Laguna Madre, and you will remember it forever. The weather in Corpus Christi is excellent year-round. Spring, Summer, and Fall are super, and the Winters are mild. Corpus Christi is a great place to get away and do some saltwater flats fly fishing. The short drive from Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio makes getting to Corpus Christi from all over South Texas easy. For those flying into the Corpus Christi International Airport, you will have a pleasant and relaxing experience. All you need for a great day of fly fishing is to contact me, Captain Joe Mendez.

The beautiful shallow water of the Laguna Madre is a great place to wade for tailing redfish. Redfish continuously cruise the crystal clear flats of the Laguna Madre, stopping when they find a shrimp or crab to snack on. I will put you in the casting distance of these redfish and allow you to present the fly. Wading is usually done in 10 to 18 inches of water; the shallow flats of the Laguna Madre make it easy to stalk and sight-cast tailing redfish. Generally, you won’t have to cast more than 45-50 feet, and often 30-40 feet will do. First thing in the morning is the best time to find tailing fish; however, you can see tailing fish throughout the day. As the sun rises, your chances for sight-casting fish will improve, especially for those not tailing fish. Both methods make challenging and exciting fishing.
We fly fishing from the boat 90 percent of the time; it is both productive and comfortable. Fishing from the boat has many advantages, but the most helpful is height. From the boat deck, it is easier to see the fish and also see which direction the fish are moving. It gives you the time to make your cast and place the fly in front of the fish. The morning is the best time to find tailing fish; however, you can see tailing fish throughout the day. As the sun rises, your chances for sight-casting fish will improve, especially for those not tailing fish. It’s great to be sight-casting to tailing redfish first thing in the morning. Don’t miss your chance to make lifelong memories with family and friends.
