In June, fishing in the Upper Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay is about as good as possible. This time of year, we have so many options. Sight casting for redfish and trout with paddle tails in shallow water works great on many days, as long as the wind doesn’t blow too hard. When sight casting, your best bet is to cast beyond the fish and bring the lure steadily by them, as close as possible, without spooking the fish. We also have great fishing for trout around the rocks in Baffin Bay. Sometimes, the best plan is to cast to the rocks and let the lure flutter toward the bottom. But, when the winds are calm and the water is clear, we often have a great topwater bite. In this case, we can see herds of mullet huddled on top of the rocks. That’s a great time to throw your top water past the schools of mullet, making them move out of the way as the lure passes over the rocks. This results in some exciting blow-ups when it works right. This month is the beginning of the best time of year for people who prefer using bait.
